Youth Marketing Tip #87: Who do they really want to be?
People I meet in the industry like to ask me: "So, what are Malaysian youths really like?"
My reply is always the same.
"Who do they really want to be?"
I know I avoided the question. I'm cheeky like that, I can't help it. But I also believe it is a more important question to ask.
On one hand, marketing your product to their existing needs and wants, playing to their current identity can help get good customers. However. Want GREAT customers? Raving fans? Help them become who they really want to be.
This is the very same reason street teams promote their favorite bands for free, and the cult of Mac continue to convert every PC user they see. Great products and brands help their users go to the next level and realize their aspirational identity.
But there's a catch.
We're Always Hiring.
As Malaysia's Largest Youth Community Marketing Platform, we just can't stop growing.
If you're big on growing your career, consider this:
- All our projects - we go for largest, biggest, and most successful. We only do one big event a year, (YOUTH'08, and now YOUTH'09) and its by far the largest youth lifestyle event in Malaysia.
- In 6 months, we've built Malaysia's Largest Youth Opinion Community YouthSays.com, and every day, we're driving for more growth.
- We'll soon be launching 2 new youth community marketing platforms in the next 6 months (also with the target to be Malaysia's Largest) and aim for regional expansion by 2010.
Given the trajectory we're on, we're always going to need capable young folks like you to fuel our growth.
- Are you young, driven, working over-time, all the time, but don't see yourself going anywhere?
- Is your organization growing too slowly?
- Is your work not challenging or rewarding enough?
- Are you uninspired by your co-workers?
- Are you talented, hardworking, driven, and looking for a place to shine?
If yes...
A light hearted look at survey questions
Do you sometimes feel market research has to 'Get Real'?
(From my favorite comic strip Wondermark!)
Questionnaire design is a funny thing.
Sure. If you really want to get insights, some scientific rigor has to be in place. You want objective, accurate feedback. So you phrase your questions the way the industry does it. I do that too.
However, I believe real insights can also come from real conversations. Trade a bit of formality in return for authenticity. Especially when you're trying to understand young people. You're getting into their world, not so much forcing them to adapt to yours. Get this right, and your survey questions turn you into a trusted listener, and the young Malaysian will open up to you, and fill up your survey freely, expressing themselves like they would on their blog...
Marketing Magazine features Youth Community Marketing in Malaysia
Click on the pictures to download the article!
It's scanned from this month's issue of the industry mag Marketing magazine, available on shelves across 170 stores in the Klang Valley. It's JPEG form and quite readable, except my hair has been PhotoShopped to look like a black cauliflower.
Or, read the text version below, it's got some extra pictures. I'm open to comments and questions, as the contents of the article may be foreign to some marketers.
Also, stay tuned for next month's issue, I've got a different kind of article in that one. If you want me to just email it to ya, click here.
